Norwalk Crews Shine In California Regatta

NORWALK, Conn. ? Faced with heavy graduation losses for a second straight year, Connecticut Boat Club coach Liz Trond figured the Norwalk-based team might need time to rebuild. But after winning two medals at the Newport Autumn Rowing Festival in California, Trond?s plan is ahead of schedule.

CBC crews won one race and finished second in another in a regatta that featured the top tams in the country.
The Varsity 4+ won gold with coxswain Kassy Boliakis of Norwalk, and Darien?s Kylie Maier, Ridgefield?s Meg Galloway, Wilton?s Katherine Squitieri and Darien?s Kendra Shutts.

The Varsity 8+ took second with Boliakis, Maier, New Canaan?s Casey Clifford, Galloway, Squitieri, Darien?s Juliet Ruhe, Kendra Shutts and Kate Tyrrell, and Bea Nash of Greenwich.

The second Varsity 4+ took sixth with Courtney Lincoln, Holly Geffs, Sarah Mudd, Paige Voight and Jessica Ferrante.

"Racing in California against some of the top teams in the country was the perfect way to complete our fall season,?? Trond said. ?We were able to beat the team who won the Head of the Charles in the 4+, and have our best race in the 8+, finishing just two seconds out of first place.

"As the only East Coast team at the event this year, the athletes handled the travel, time change and change in equipment extremely well. Racing out West gives us an opportunity to see the California teams, and what our competition will be for Nationals in June. Also, it gives us some motivation as we head indoors to train for the next 14 weeks, as we will be back racing in California the first week in April.?
