Suicide bomber kills 14 at Afghan province council

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A suicide bomber struck outside a provincial council headquarters in northern Afghanistan on Monday, killing the council chief and at least 13 others, authorities said. The Taliban insurgency quickly claimed responsibility.

Seeking to weaken the Afghan government, Taliban insurgents have been carrying out attacks and assassinations intended to intimidate both officials and civilians ahead of next year's withdrawal of most international troops.

Baghlan provincial council leader Mohammad Rasoul Mohseni was entering the compound in the morning when the bomber ran up on foot and detonated his explosives in the provincial capital of Pul-e-Khumri, said Baghlan chief of police Asadullah Sherzad.

He said 14 people were killed, including Mohseni, and 11 were wounded.

Mohammad Zahier Ghanizada, a member of parliament from Baghlan, confirmed the council chief's death and added that Mohseni had previously received multiple death threats.

Also killed in the attack were six police bodyguards and seven civilians, Sherzad said.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed in a text message to journalists that an insurgent operative carried out the targeted bombing.

"Today at 11 a.m. in front of the Baghlan provincial council office, we have carried out a suicide attack and killed the head of the council," it said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing Monday.

"Such attacks are against all human rights and the principles of Islam," Karzai said in a statement. "Perpetrators of such attacks are enemies of the Afghan nation and the puppets of foreigners."

Karzai left later Monday for a two-day state visit to India, where he is expected to request military aid.

Both Karzai and the U.S. have sought peace talks with the Taliban and other insurgent factions in preparation for most foreign troops leaving next year after more than 12 years of war, but the efforts have borne little fruit. The Taliban seek to re-establish the strict interpretation of Islamic law they imposed for five years before being ousted in the 2001 U.S.-led invasion over its sheltering of al-Qaida's terrorist leadership.

The insurgents last month launched a fierce new spring offensive that has in the past week alone seen the police chief of Farah province gunned down outside his home and twin bombings that killed nine people in an elite gated community for government officials and business owners outside of the southern city of Kandahar. Two bombs also exploded outside the provincial governor's office in Nangarhar province last week, killing one police guard.

Insurgents have also targeted members of the international coalition. A roadside bomb killed four American soldiers last week in the country's south, while another insurgent faction, Hizb-e-Islami, targeted a coalition convoy in the capital of Kabul two days later, killing two U.S. soldiers and four American contractors who were training Afghan troops to take over security.

(AP) ? Syrian government forces pushed deeper into a strategic opposition-held town near the Lebanese border Monday, battling rebels in fierce street fighting, Syrian state-media said. An activist group said at least 23 elite fighters from Lebanon's Hezbollah militant group fighting alongside regime troops have been killed in the clashes.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which tracks the country's civil war, said that in addition to the deaths more than 100 Hezbollah members have been wounded in the fighting around the town of Qusair. If confirmed, the casualties would be a significant blow to the Shiite group, which has come under harsh criticism at home in Lebanon for its involvement in Syria's civil war.

A staunch ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, Hezbollah is heavily invested in the survival of the Damascus regime and is known to have sent fighters to aid government forces. The Lebanese group's growing role in the civil war next door also points to the deeply sectarian nature of the conflict in Syria, in which a rebellion driven by the country's Sunni majority seeks to overthrow a regime dominated by the president's Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

The Observatory, which relies on a wide network of activists in the ground in Syria, cited "sources close to the militant group" for the death toll but declined to reveal their identity. It said at least 50 Syrian rebels were also killed in the battle for Qusair on Sunday, including two opposition commanders.

For weeks, fighting has raged around Qusair, a town in the central province of Homs that has been under rebel control since early last year.

The intensity of the fighting reflects the importance that both sides attach to the area. In the regime's calculations, Qusair lies along a strategic land corridor linking Damascus with the Mediterranean coast, the Alawite heartland. For the rebels, overwhelmingly Sunni Qusair has served as a conduit for shipments of weapons and supplies smuggled from Lebanon to opposition fighters inside Syria.

On Sunday, the regime launched an offensive to regain control of Qusair, with Hezbollah's elite fighters pushing into the town from the east and south, an opposition figure said.

He said Hezbollah troops took control of the main square and the municipal building in the center of the city in a few hours. By the end of the day Sunday, they pushed out rebel units, including the al-Qaida-affiliated Jabhat al-Nusra, from most of Qusair, he added Monday on condition of anonymity, for fear of retaliation by both sides.

He said fighting was focused in the northern part of the town on Monday.

The account matched that of Syria's state news media, which said President Bashar Assad's troops took control of most of Qusair on Monday. State-run TV said forces restored stability to the entire eastern front of the town, killing scores of terrorists there.

Residents on the Lebanese side of the border just across from Qusair reported seeing more than 30 plumes of smoke billowing from inside Syria and hearing the heavy thud of artillery and airstrikes late into the night Sunday and on Monday morning.

"Nobody could sleep last night from the sounds of battle," said Ali Jaafar, deputy mayor of the Lebanese border town of Hermel, adding that residents did not send children to school Monday for fear of fighting spilling over into Lebanon.

Before Sunday's offensive, Qusair had been ringed by regime troops and fighters from the Lebanese militia Hezbollah, an Assad ally, for several weeks.

Lebanese security officials confirmed at least four funerals were being held Monday morning for Hezbollah fighters or their supporters killed in Syria. They spoke on condition of anonymity in line with military regulations.

Army units "restored security and stability" to most of the city on Monday and killed "many terrorists," the majority of them foreign fighters who have been fighting alongside opposition forces, the state news agency said. The military also destroyed rebel hideouts and seized "large amounts of weapons and ammunition," it said, adding that government troops are fighting pockets of resistance in several districts of Qusair Monday.

The Syrian regime claims there is no civil war in the country but that the army is fighting foreign-backed terrorists trying to topple Assad's government.

More than 70,000 people have been killed in Syria since March 2011.

At least 1.5 million Syrian who fled civil war have sought shelter in neighboring countries such as Lebanon, Jordan and Turkey, while millions more have been displaced inside Syria and are in urgent need of basic aid, according to the United Nations.

An international aid organization, Oxfam, appealed for more funds to help Syrian refugees, saying warmer weather will increase health risks due to lack of shelter, water and basic sanitation in Lebanon and Jordan.

The Britain-based group said in a statement Monday that diarrhea and skin infections have already been noted among refugees in Jordan and Lebanon. The two countries host the bulk of 1.5 million Syrian refugees.

Oxfam said it needs $53 million dollars to improve access to water and proper sanitation for Syrian refugees. So far the aid group has received $10.6 million dollars.

Highest Priced Home Listing in US -- $190 Million ... - AOL Real Estate

Aerial view of highest priced home listing

We thought the Crespi/Hicks Estate in Dallas was expensive at $135 million, but this brand new listing blows that right out of the water. The Greenwich, Conn., estate of timber mogul John Rudey has just hit the market for an absolutely astounding $190 million -- making it the highest priced listing for a private home in the United States.

So what can $190 million buy you? To begin with, the enormous and lavish Copper Beech Farm boasts 4,000 feet of water frontage and two offshore islands. The main house, a French Renaissance mansion constructed in 1896, measures 15,000 square feet and boasts a wood-paneled library, a staff wing and a solarium. The grounds -- sprawled across 50 acres -- include an apple orchard, two greenhouses, a tennis court, and a 75-foot-long heated pool. But is it all worth $190 million? Judge for yourself.

North Korea fires projectile into eastern waters

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) ? South Korea says North Korea has fired a projectile into waters off its eastern coast a day after launching three short-range missiles in the same area.

The South's Defense Ministry says the firing occurred Sunday afternoon. It did not say whether it was a missile or artillery.

North Korea routinely test-launches short-range missiles.

The launches come during a period of tentative diplomacy aimed at easing tension on the Korean Peninsula. The U.S. responded to the previous day's launches by saying threats or provocations would only further deepen North Korea's international isolation, while South Korea urged the North to take responsible actions.

Earlier this year, North Korea threatened to attack South Korea and the U.S. to protest annual joint military drills and U.N. sanctions imposed after its February nuclear test.

Stevens rides Oxbow to 3rd Preakness win

BALTIMORE (AP) ? Although no one really keeps track of such things, Gary Stevens had no problem making the assessment with complete conviction.

"I guarantee I'm the first grandfather winner of a Triple Crown race," said the 50-year-old Stevens, who guided Oxbow to a stunning upset victory Saturday in the Preakness.

Stevens retired in 2005 after a long struggle with knee pain. He resumed riding in early January, the same week he got a call from 77-year-old trainer D. Wayne Lukas, who told him about a couple of promising 3-year-old colts who could make the Derby.

One of them was Oxbow.

With Stevens riding confidently in the saddle, Oxbow led from start to finish and won the Preakness by 1? lengths to end Orb's bid for the Triple Crown. The victory justified Stevens' decision to return to racing.

"I'm not going to lie to you, to win a classic at 50 years old after seven years' retirement, it doesn't get any better than this," he said. "This is super, super sweet. All the stars were aligned. I couldn't be more pleased winning this thing. It's even more special winning it for Wayne Lukas and his team."

It was Stevens' third career victory in the Preakness, the first since 1997 on Silver Charm.

Oxbow covered the 1 3/16th miles in 1:57.54. The ride, Stevens said, was easier than it looked.

"A lot of critics are going to think that I'm full of it saying this, but I won with a little something left, believe it or not," Stevens said.

Stevens captured his first Triple Crown race in 1988 for Lukas, and they have remained close since then.

"Wayne put me on the map," Stevens said. "When you win that first classic, your phone starts ringing and people want you. I got the call about Oxbow this year dating all the way back to 1988."

It was a phone call Lukas won't ever regret. Although he changed jockeys on his other two entrants in the Preakness, Lukas remained convinced that Stevens was the right person to ride Oxbow. For days, they talked about the best way to run the race. But there's really no way to predict what the other horses will do.

"I left it up to Gary," Lukas said. "Let me say, I think I got a Hall of Fame ride. We can plan this thing, we can talk about it, we can talk about strategy. But once that gate is open, they have to make the decisions. Gary made some great ones."

As he was gathering momentum and leaving the other eight horses in his wake, Stevens couldn't help but think about the trainer that provided him with his first Triple Crown winner and got him back into the game at an age when most jockeys have long since quit.

"I was smiling pretty good on the back side. I actually thought about Wayne up in the grandstands," Stevens said. "I knew he had to be looking at those fractions and was pleased with what he was seeing."

Not long after that, Lukas, Stevens and their brown colt had a wonderful time in the winner's circle.

"He wasn't a tired horse. He was a happy horse," Stevens said. "He enjoyed the celebration as much, well maybe not as much as Wayne and I, but he was enjoying it."

Next up for Stevens, Lukas and Oxbow: A ride over 1? miles in the Belmont on June 8.

"What about the Belmont? This horse has a happy kind of pace, and anybody that wants to come and tangle with him early on, bring it on. You're going to get in trouble if you tangle with him. That's all I can say."

Oh, he had more. As he was wrapping up his press conference, Stevens said, "You're only as good as the horses you ride and the people that you ride for. And I rode for what I consider to be one of the greatest trainers of all time."

Then he looked up and saw Lukas in the corner of the room.

"I didn't know you were standing there still," Stevens said. "Oh, all right. I love you, Wayne."

Russian oligarchs foot most of 2014 Sochi Olympics

SOCHI, Russia (AP) ? The mountains of Sochi are now home to Potanin's slope, Gazprom's gondola lift and Sberbank's ski jump. The nicknames used by locals and an army of construction workers leave no doubt about who is paying for the 2014 Winter Games: Russia's business powerhouses.

Other countries that have hosted the Olympics have overwhelmingly used public funds to pay for the construction of needed venues and new infrastructure. The Russian government, however, has gotten state-controlled companies and tycoons to foot more than half of the bill, which now stands at $51 billion and makes the 2014 Winter Games by far the most expensive Olympics in history. In contrast, the much-larger 2012 Summer Olympics in London cost about $14.3 billion and the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing cost about $40 billion.

For President Vladimir Putin, the games have been a matter of pride. He has entrusted the country's top businessmen with Sochi's key projects. He himself is spending increasing amounts of time in the southern Russian city, hosting world leaders at his luxurious presidential palace.

Mikhail Kasyanov, a former prime minister under Putin, described the tycoons' participation as a sort of tax imposed by the president.

"If you want to carry on doing business in Russia, here's the tax you need to pay ? the kind of a tax that he wants you to pay," Kasyanov, now an opposition leader, told The Associated Press.

This is particularly true of those like metals tycoons Vladimir Potanin and Oleg Deripaska, who made their fortunes in the rags-to-riches privatizations after the 1991 collapse of the Soviet Union. For others who have grown fabulously wealthy since Putin came to power in 2000, the 2014 Olympics have been a chance to reap the profits through lucrative state contracts.

Most of the projects the tycoons are involved in are not profitable ? and many businessmen are making no secret of the losses they are incurring. But anyone who does business in Russia today is acutely aware of the importance of maintaining good relations with the government ? and especially with Putin. The tycoons remember well how Putin in 2008, with one verbal attack, sent the stock of metals company Mechel tumbling 40 percent, cutting $6 billion from its shareholder value.

"Russian big business is heavily dependent on the government and often has to follow Putin's requests and take on projects that are important for top officials," said Vladimir Milov, an economist and former deputy energy minister who also is now part of the anti-Putin opposition.

The tycoons and state-owned companies dismiss claims that they were pressured to invest in Sochi or that they did so in exchange for promises of preferential treatment.

Gazprom, the world's largest natural gas producer and a publicly traded company, said in a written statement to the AP that its work in Sochi is "both a business project and serious social responsibility." Gazprom's Sochi projects are vast. It is building a pipeline to bring gas supplies to the Sochi area, a power station in a Sochi suburb, an Alpine ski resort, one of the three Olympic villages and a cross-country skiing and biathlon center. Its total costs run to $3 billion.

Andrei Elinson, deputy general director at Deripaska's Basic Element investment vehicle, insists its Sochi projects were all designed to be profitable. The company is building an Olympic village and a seaport and has just finished revamping the Sochi airport, for a combined cost of $1.4 billion.

"We are a strategic investor in the area. We believe in the development of the area on the whole," Elinson said. After the games, Basic Element plans to convert the Olympic village into apartments and the sea port into a marina.

Even so, some tycoons are grumbling that they have been hit up with unexpected demands that are stretching their funds more than anticipated. Their balance sheets have been dragged down by a flow of requests from the state contractor Olimpstroi to build more infrastructure than originally planned.

Potanin started building his Roza Khutor ski resort even before Sochi was picked in 2007 to host the 2014 games. He is spending $2.5 billion, including $500 million on infrastructure required by the International Olympic Committee. In addition, the Alpine resort had to close to tourists for months at a time while hosting Olympic tests events during the past two winter seasons, costing it $3.2 million in lost revenue each month it was closed, according to Roza Khutor general director Sergei Bachin.

When Potanin's Interros holding company first committed to the games, "we had no idea what exactly would be required from us," Bachin said. Now delivering everything on time has become "a matter of honor," he said. Still, looking back, Bachin said Roza Khutor should not have been so compliant.

"When we were asked to build this or that, we were probably too yielding in taking up those requests," he said.

Potanin was the first to raise his voice. Last year he said he expected the Russian government to compensate him for at least the $500 million he is spending doing work that he said should have been the government's responsibility.

Roza Khutor has asked the government to create a special economic zone in the Sochi area. Tax rebates would allow the resort to be "operationally sound" and help it repay loans to the state-owned VEB bank more quickly, Bachin said.

The frustrations have been shared by Deripaska's Basic Element, which is suing Olimpstroi for about $50 million, the amount it had to fork out when Olimpstroi questioned the quality of the gravel used to protect the coast at the sea port. Deripaska's company also complained that the sea port it built is receiving only 20 percent of the cargo load that had been promised by the government, leaving revenues far lower than expected.

"It's pretty frustrating," Elinson said. "But we think it's curable if the government takes certain responsibly for those actions and comes up with a solution that would allow the project and the investor to recover."

He said at this stage all investors are concerned about the additional costs they have faced in Sochi.

Last month, Basic Element, Interros, Gazprom and state-owned Sberbank asked the government for help in covering some of their losses. Although there has not been an official response to the plea, the government has said in the past that investors bear full responsibility for any losses.

"Those are the risks of those who made the decision," Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Kozak, who is overseeing the Sochi preparation, said in response to complaints last year.

In contrast to the Boris Yeltsin-era oligarchs like Deripaska and Potanin who are involved in capital-consuming projects with uncertain commercial prospects, the new generation of billionaires with close ties to Putin seems actually to be making money in Sochi.

One man who stands to profit from the games is Arkady Rotenberg, who has known Putin since he was 12.

Through a majority-owned subsidiary, Rotenberg holds nearly 39 percent of the Mostotrest company, which has amassed a dozen Olympics-related state contracts to build nearly all of the highways in the area. Its projects include a $1.6 billion bypass for Sochi, as well as tunnels, bridges and railroads for a total of at least $3.4 billion.

"Those who became billionaires before Putin's rise to power now have to pay the price, and that's why they're being forced to invest and build," Kasyanov said. "Those of Putin's generation are out there to make money. They use public funds. They don't invest their own money but simply work on state contracts."

One Russian businessman in charge of an Olympic project was publicly disgraced when he failed to deliver. On a tour of Olympic sites in February, Putin harshly scolded officials for the huge delays and cost overruns in building the ski jump, a project run by real estate developer Akhmed Bilalov, who had once owned 90 percent of it. The state-controlled Sberbank had taken a controlling stake in 2012 when it was clear the project was in trouble, and Bilalov's younger brother handed over the remaining 40 percent stake after Putin's televised dressing down.

Bilalov was immediately stripped of his position as a vice president of the Russian Olympic Committee, but Putin still was not done with him. In April, prosecutors charged Bilalov with abuse of office in relation to his work as chairman of a state company that is building ski resorts elsewhere in the Caucasus Mountains of southern Russia. Facing up to four years in prison if convicted, Bilalov left Russia.

At least one company has already acknowledged the futility of its investment in Sochi.

During his inspection tour in February, Putin asked the chairman of mining giant UGMK, Andrei Bokarev, whether he would give the new $100 million hockey arena that UGMK has built to the state after the games.

"There's nothing standing in the way of you doing it," Putin commented.

That was not a direct order but its intent was clear.

Putting aside previous pledges that the stadium would be dismantled after the Sochi games and moved near an UGMK facility to benefit the company's workers, Bokarev responded with gusto to the suggestion.

"We're ready!" he said.

(AP) ? Little could lessen the fever-pitched excitement for "Hunger Games: Catching Fire," but heavy rain nevertheless dampened the film's lavish Cannes party.

Stars of the "Hunger Games" sequel, Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Sam Clafin, arrived Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival. "Catching Fire," perhaps more than any other film not actually screening at Cannes, is seeking to use the festival's global platform to promote the highly anticipated sequel.

Digital flame billboards have constantly burned by the Majestic Barriere hotel. The cast posed for photographers Saturday. And in the evening, Lionsgate held a lavish soiree beside the beach on the Croisette, complete with flowing liquid chocolate and parading models dressed in the film's ornate costumes.

But a planned stunt at the party to promote the film was scuttled due to the poor weather that has plagued the first five days of the French Riviera festival. Lawrence made an enthusiastic appearance, but later fled, grimacing ? like other guests ? at the cold raindrops.

"The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" will be released in late November.

Page last updated at Sunday, May 19, 2013 3:03 AM //

farmer_1Mr Hayford Baah-Adade, Board Member of Export Development and Agricultural Investment Fund (EDAIF) said at the weekend that the Fund?s revised charter could boost the contribution of agriculture considerably to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

Speaking to a gathering of agri-business stakeholders in Ho the Volta Region he said the Fund have the resources to support industrious business people countrywide to stop the decline of agriculture?s contribution to national GDP, which he put at 24.6 per cent currently.

Originally, EDAIF was known as, Export Development and Investment Fund, (EDIF), incorporated in 2000 to support only export orientated businesses.

It now has a new mandate to support agricultural related businesses with capacity for agro-processing, warranting the change of name from EDIF to EDAIF.

Mr Baah-Adadey expressed dissatisfaction that Ghanaian shops are heavily stocked with imported fruit juices, when the country has huge capacity to produce and process different kinds of fruits for local consumption.

He said facilities provided by EDAIF are good deals for serious businesses and asked farmers seeking credit from banks to demand that they are linked to EDAIF?s credits and grants, which have very competitive interest rates.

Mr Baah-Adade said the facilities are being managed through the commercial banks and hinted that efforts to involve the rural banks in the disbursement of EDAIF facilities are on- going.

He said the EDAIF team was in the Region as part of a nationwide outreach to get people to know about the Fund and the opportunities it holds for them.

Nana Adwoa Adadey, Research Manager at EDAIF, who presented a paper on categories, range of credits and the approval process said the interest rate is 12.5 per cent as against the? 22 per cent and 27 per cent the banks charges.

She said EDAIF had made arrangements with the National Board for Small-Scale Industries, to guide applicants on the writing of business plans.

A brochure circulated among participants listed eligible businesses as, farmers of agricultural produce relating to agro-processing, marketers of agricultural produce relating to agro-processing and marketers of locally processed agricultural produce for the domestic market.

The rest are investors undertaking an infrastructural project to provide services for agriculture and agro-processing entities, and an aggregator facilitating production from out-growers to agro-processing.

The EDAIF team, which tagged the overture ?a conversation with the Volta Region,? also sent representatives on local FM stations with their messages, besides the well-attended stakeholders meeting.

The South welcomes 'crazy ants.' Hail the latest invader

'Crazy ants' from South America are hitching rides across the South, setting up massive colonies, and relieving other occupying ant armies, including fire ants, of their duties.

Hairy crazy ants are on the move in Florida, Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The flea-sized critters are called crazy because each ant in the horde seems to scramble randomly, moving so fast that videos look as if they're on fast-forward.

The South is being invaded ? again. This time it?s erratic but troublesome ?crazy ants? from South America marching ? actually, hitching rides ? across the South, setting up massive colonies, and relieving other occupying ant armies, including fire ants, of their duties.

With billions of ants possible per acre, crazy ants, known for their random, jerky travel, eat or chase away most other insects and reptiles, and hound yard pets inside. In single numbers pretty innocuous-looking, tiny tawny crazy ants also make pests out of themselves by sometimes biting people and shorting out home electrical wiring.

The question now is if there?s room enough in the South for the newcomers, or whether the US needs to invest in research to figure out how to stop the ?tawny crazy ant,? a well as its cousins, the ?black crazy ant,? and the ?Caribbean crazy ant,? before they?re ubiquitous.

?The entire Gulf Coast is going to be inundated in a very short period of time,? entomologist Tom Rasberry, who found and identified the crazy ants in 2002, recently told a local CBS News broadcast.

Having already spread in the span of a decade from a bunch of counties surrounding Houston to as far away as Florida, crazy ant success so far is entirely due to their hitchhiking skills. A few ants clambering aboard at a truck stop in Waco, Texas, may soon find themselves starting a colony in Covington, Georgia. They thrive best in warmer, moister locales, which means the South is stuck with them.

But as with most invasive species, ?crazy ants? can have unexpected, sometimes paradoxical, impacts on their conquered ground. Fire ants, which were accidentally introduced in the 1930s and now pretty much own the South, apparently can?t stand ?crazy ants,? and retreat from the conquering horde, as do most other ant species.

And despite oftentimes legitimate cries of concern from the scientific community about the dangers of invasive plants and animals in the US, many one-time strangers-to-these-parts ? kudzu, snakeheads, boas, Yankees ? become, at least in the eyes of some Southerners, manageable pests, part of an ever-changing backdrop of wildlife at the door.

This being the South, even scientists have sought out Biblical insights into how to view the invasion, including this from Proverbs 6:6-8 cited in a Texas A&M research paper about invasive ants: ?Go to the ant, O sluggard/ Observe her ways and be wise/It has no commander/No overseer or ruler.??

Kanye's 'Yeezus': Album Name And June 18 Release Date Confirmed

Fresh off debuting a new music video via 66 guerrilla style projections shown on buildings all around the world, Kanye West has some more news to share with the music-listening community. West's sixth studio album will be released June 18 (as previously hinted in West's tweet) and be titled "Yeezus."

Rap-Up confirmed the news on Saturday. West is due to perform two songs on "Saturday Night Live," and sources tell The Huffington Post that he'll debut a previously unheard song as part of the show.

This isn't the first time "Yeezus" has been tossed around. Kid Cudi (formerly signed to Kanye's G.O.O.D. Music label) coined the term well over a year ago (a tip of the hat to Complex for the find). West also famously posed for a Rolling Stone cover wearing a crown of thorns.

Confronting The Reality Of US Broadband Performance

broadbandEditor's note: Richard Bennett is a Senior Fellow with the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation and co-author of ITIF?s 2013 report, "The Whole Picture: Where America?s Broadband Networks Really Stand." We?ve all heard the story: America?s broadband networks are second-rate. We pay exorbitant prices for shoddy service because broadband providers print money and hold innovation in a death grip. While America languishes, our competitors in Europe and Asia are racing ahead to a user-generated content utopia. The only way forward is a government takeover, or, failing that, a massive dose of regulation.

Rumor Alert: Yahoo Is Buying Tumblr for a Billion?

Yahoo has a problem: it has no idea what it's doing, or how it's going to do it (outside of teenage dream hires). Some people who claim intimate knowledge say the company is going to do it by throwing a serious Hail Mary: buying Tumblr for $1,000,000,000. That's one billion.

AdWeek says AllThingsD says Tumblr's had Marissa Mayers gaze for some time now:

It?s not the first time Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has been interested in the New York-based hipster blogging service. As an executive at Google, she had closely watched its fast growth, along with that of Foursquare. Since she took over at Yahoo, several sources said that she has met with its top execs, including founder and CEO David Karp.

But sources said that interest has gotten stronger more recently, coming at the same time as Tumblr has been stepping up its efforts to raise a large funding round that could value the New York company at $1 billion.

Given how little Tumblr's shows it can earn, this would be a major (risky!) purchase. But nothing urges By God, Yes, Make that major purchase like the stench of financial ruin, and it'd be a godsend for Tumblr. The supremely popular service is, well, supremely popular, but a revenue dearth combined with leadership doubts about founder David Karp mean the property isn't as sweet as it might've been in years past?a billion dollars is generous. But at least we can assume Yahoo would take care of all the porn.

Re: the Benghazi messages: Browse administration emails like an inbox

The 100 pages of emails that the White House released on Wednesday, which cover the administration's crafting of its talking points about the Sept. 11, 2012, attack in Benghazi, Libya, do not contain any clear indications of a political cover-up.

But they do indicate that the CIA, FBI, State Department and the White House operate with the same sort of office drudgery as workplaces across America. There are the same cascading CC lists, the guy who insists on formally addressing every email message to "Colleagues" and the incessant looping in of one more person as a decision impends.

The following interactive arranges the emails as a typical inbox, in date order. For the sake of simplicity, every email is included in one inbox instead of separate ones for different people. You can click the "From" or "Thread" bars to sort by those fields instead.

Letters in square brackets indicate that a person's name was redacted and replaced by a handwritten acronym representing the organization he or she works for.

What Kind of Wallet Do You Carry? Sleek and Slim or Over-Stuffed?

Zippo, a brand long associated with smokers and arsonists, has now decided to use its expertise in stainless steel to help those burdened with a giant Costanza wallet as it's come to be known. The company's new wallet is just under half an-inch thick, and its stainless steel housing will help block wireless signals if you're worried about ID theft.

But what do you think? Have you already made the switch to a minimalist wallet to slim down your pockets? Or will one day someone have to pry that over-stuffed monstrosity from your cold, dead back pocket? [Zippo]

White House in full damage-control mode

By Roberta Rampton and Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senior White House officials responsible for navigating the administration through a trio of scandals met on Thursday with outside Democratic strategists for advice on how to get past the controversies and back on track advancing the president's agenda.

The White House is trying to regain the upper hand after being knocked on the defensive over its response to deadly attacks in Benghazi, Libya, the seizure of journalists' phone records in a Justice Department leak investigation, and the Internal Revenue Service's targeting of conservative groups for special scrutiny.

Now, President Barack Obama's closest advisers want to find a way to return attention to his top priorities, such as creating more jobs and reforming immigration laws, while continuing to show they are trying to get to the bottom of the controversies.

"I think what they've done in the last two days is a great demonstration that they're prepared to own this stuff and deal with it," said Tad Devine, a longtime Democratic strategist invited to the Thursday meeting.

"There's always going to be bumps in the road. That's just the nature of it. I think they're going to be fine, as long as they stick to the big issues," Devine told Reuters.

About a dozen outside strategists huddled with White House Chief of Staff Denis McDonough, senior advisers Valerie Jarrett and Dan Pfeiffer, communications director Jen Palmieri and press secretary Jay Carney.

Pfeiffer confirmed the meeting but declined to provide details.

The session was one of a handful of regularly scheduled meetings between Obama aides and outside advisers. It was scheduled after the trio of crises were in full swing - but participants said it would be incorrect to call it a crisis summit.

Obama is ending the week by traveling to Baltimore on Friday to talk about his proposals to boost early-childhood education, create manufacturing jobs and fix crumbling infrastructure.

"I can't think of any better time" for such a trip, said Devine, who said polls and focus groups consistently show that voters want elected leaders to focus on the economy rather than "peripheral issues."

DAMAGE-CONTROL MODE

At the beginning of the week the White House struggled to counter criticism about the scandals. By midweek, that had changed, with damage control in full swing.

On Wednesday Obama announced that the acting head of the IRS had been asked to resign and on Thursday announced a successor, delivering the swift action that critics had called for after news of the extra scrutiny first came out.

While defending his Attorney General Eric Holder and Justice Department investigations into leaks about national security issues, Obama also pushed for Congress to revive proposals that would help reporters protect their sources.

The White House released 100 pages of emails to demonstrate transparency on its deliberations over how to explain the September 11, 2012, attacks that killed four Americans in Benghazi, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Mike McCurry, a longtime press secretary to former President Bill Clinton who attended Thursday's meeting, said criticism that the White House had been slow to respond to the controversies was unfair.

"They had to be patient, and they had to get it right," he said.

McCurry said White House officials made clear at the meeting that they were determined to respond effectively to the issues dominating the news this week without losing sight of the president's other priorities, including strengthening the economy.

"Most of the discussion was, how can you effectively do that," he said.

Outside strategists said it might be worthwhile for the White House to reorganize its staff to have a point person or two for the scandals, particularly as Congress delves deeper into its IRS investigations. But they said they had no indication that might happen.

Reorganizing White House staff could leave spokesman Jay Carney freer to talk about Obama's agenda in daily briefings rather than being bogged down in daily interrogations about the details of congressional probes, they said.

Newer diabetes medications may have additional cardiovascular benefits

May 17, 2013 ? A newer class of medications used to control blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetics may also improve cardiovascular health, researchers from The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center reported in a new meta-analysis presented yesterday at the American Society of Hypertension's Annual Scientific Meeting and Exposition.

Researchers found that the use of glucagon-like peptide-1 agonists, known as GLP-1 mimetics, resulted in a systolic blood pressure (SBP) reduction of -2.22 mmHg, a loss of almost six pounds, and a decrease of HbA1c -- an indicator of blood sugar levels -- of 0.41 percent.

"While our findings must be viewed as preliminary it does provide compelling evidence of potential long-term cardiovascular advantages of GLP-1 analogs," said lead investigator Sanjay Rajagopalan, MD, John W. Wolfe Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine and director for vascular research at Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center. "Stroke and heart disease are the leading causes of death in people with diabetes, so this is an area that deserves additional study."

For the meta-analysis, the researchers analyzed 33 randomized studies involving 12,469 patients with type 2 diabetes assessing the glycemic control efficacy of both short acting and long acting GLP-1 mimetics. They specifically looked at GLP-1 impact on sitting systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, weight, HbA1c and heart rate after 12-56 weeks of treatment. All studies included a comparator group that used other anti-glycemic medications or placebo.

"The significance of our meta-analysis is that it uses direct evidence from both published and unpublished trials that include blood pressure data and glycemic efficacy of GLP-1 agonists with a non-incretin control group including placebo," noted Rajagopalan. "The results were maintained when the placebo controlled trials alone were examined."

The research team also found that the baseline body weight, HbA1c, SBP, study duration, weight loss, HbA1c reduction or heart rate change did not predict the size of the estimated treatment effect or explain heterogeneity between studies.

GLP-1 is a peptide hormone that stimulates insulin and inhibits glucagon secretion in a glucose-dependent manner. Recent studies suggest that the GLP-1 receptor is widely expressed in the cardiovascular system with a variety of effects including improvements in endothelial function that may lead to lowering of blood pressure. GLP-1 mimetics are available globally for the treatment of type 2 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes is a common form of diabetes mellitus that develops especially in adults and most often in obese individuals. It is characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from impaired insulin utilization coupled with the body's inability to compensate with increased insulin production. Diabetes affects an estimated 23.6 million people in the US (90 percent to 95 percent have type 2 diabetes) -- 17.9 million have been diagnosed, but 5.7 million are unaware they have the disease. According to the most recent statistics, diabetes was the sixth leading cause of death, and the fifth leading cause of death from disease in 2007. Diabetes costs $116 billion annually in direct medical costs and $58 billion annually in indirect costs (loss of work, disability, loss of life).

'Star Trek Into Darkness' lifts off with $3.3 million from Imax, midnight shows

By Todd Cunningham

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - "Star Trek Into Darkness" has launched with $3.3 million from Wednesday night screenings at 336 Imax 3D theaters and some midnight shows, Paramount Pictures reported.

J.J. Abrams' space epic sequel opened nationwide Thursday in 3,762 theaters and is expected to knock "Iron Man 3" out of the top spot at the box office this weekend. It could take in more than $100 million over its extended debut weekend, analysts say.

Expectations surged after Paramount announced sellouts for Wednesday night's shows in New York, L.A., San Francisco and other major markets and moved the wide release date up a day, from Friday to Thursday.

"Star Trek Into Darkness" accounted for 71 percent of online ticket broker Fandango's sales earlier this week, and rival Movietickets.com reported more than 300 sellouts. The reviews have been very strong; it has an 87 percent positive rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Paramount and director Abrams successfully re-launched the franchise in 2009 with "Star Trek," which brought in more than $255 million domestically. The sequel is expected to do even better for producers Paramount, Skydance Pictures and Abrams' Bad Robot Productions, especially overseas. The production budget was $190 million and there's been a major marketing push behind the film.

Chris Pine returns as Capt. Kirk, and is rejoined by Zach Quinto (Spock), Zoe Saldana (Lt. Uhura), Karl Urban (Bones), John Cho (Sulu), Anton Yelchin (Chekov) and Simon Pegg (Scotty). British actor Benedict Cumberbatch comes aboard as the baddie Khan. Robert Orci and Alex Kurtzman, along with Damon Lindelof, wrote the screenplay.

Google Play Games Just Made Android Gaming Awesome(r)

Gaming on Android just got a way more legit. Google's just announced its new "Google Play Games" app and service at I/O today, and that comes with a whole bunch of features from achievements to leaderboards to matchmaking, multiplayer, and even cloud saves.

Any serious gaming platform nowadays has its own social network to build on, and Google's not to be left out. Your Play Games identity will be managed by?you guessed it?Google+, but that'll bring a whole bunch of social features to the table. The new app includes matchmaking and mulitplayer game options, an achievement system, saves that sync between devices linked to your account, and leaderboards in both "global" and "friends only" flavors. Basically, everything you'd expect to find rolled into a console gaming experience, for this generation anyway.

Of course, these features will only apply to Play-powered games, which will be tagged with a little controller-shaped badge for your identification convenience. Google Play Games is coming to your Froyo+ device today, via a Google services update, with a bunch of enabled games launching today as well. It should be a great diversion while we wait for all the other I/O goodness to hit. Let the games begin.

Apple Contends Deals With Publishers Improved E-Book ...

point_counterpointThe United States Department of Justice has described Apple?s defense against allegations that it conspired to illegally fix e-book prices ?unconvincing? and ?untethered from both precedent and logic.?

Evidently, Apple feels much the same way about the DOJ?s charges.

In an 81-page April 26 filing that was made public today, Apple pointedly denied federal prosecutors? accusations, saying the discussions they?ve painted as collusion were simply tough business negotiations and that their end result ? an ?agency? e-book pricing model where publishers, not retailers, set prices ? made the e-book market more competitive, not less.

?Apple did not conspire to fix e-book prices,? the company said in its filing. ?The evidence proves that Apple acted independently, to further its own legitimate business goals, in negotiating agency agreements with the publishers to enter the e-book market.?

Apple disputes the DOJ?s view that it was the ?ringmaster? of a publisher conspiracy to eliminate price competition and raise e-book prices. Instead, it claims it was simply a new entrant in a market that was ?roiled by a public conflict between publishers and Amazon? ? a market that was already considering the agency pricing model currently at issue.

?Amazon at the time sold 9 out of every 10 e-books, and many publishers publicly disagreed with Amazon?s uniform, below-cost pricing strategy for New York Times bestsellers,? Apple said in its filing. ?This tumult in the industry inspired the second largest e-retailer, Barnes & Noble, to push for agency agreements with the publishers. And Amazon used an agency-like model for small publishers and self-published authors. In other words, Apple did not introduce agency to the e-book industry; it was simply the first to reach an agency agreement with the industry?s largest publishers.?

And for a new entrant to the e-book market, as Apple was at the time, the agency model was a logical one. The company was looking for a 30 percent commission on every sale; it was hardly going to get that from publishers at the $9.99 price point Amazon had established.

Which is not to say that it was opposed to $9.99. According to its filing, it wasn?t. As long as it was able to collect that 30 percent commission, Apple said it didn?t particularly care what price publishers sold their books at. Yes, it required a ?Most Favored Nation? agreement from publishers that gave it the right to lower prices to match low prices offered by competing retailers, but it argues it did this to remain competitive with Amazon, not to influence its business model.

?The evidence shows that Apple told the publishers that they were free to remain on a wholesale model with other retailers, even as the publishers sold e-books on Apple?s bookstore under an agency arrangement,? Apple argues.

And that?s Apple?s broader point in this filing: By negotiating for an agency pricing model with publishers, it was simply seeking to enter a new market and offer competitive prices. It wasn?t colluding to push e-book prices higher. It wasn?t attempting to change Amazon?s business model. It was just conducting business ? legitimately. To Apple, the DOJ?s allegations that it was doing anything else, let alone engaging in an ?illegal conspiracy? that ?increase[ed] the retail prices of trade e-books? is ?demonstrably false.? And the company insists the facts are on its side:

Average prices for trade e-books have fallen, and output, whether measured in the number of sales, the number of titles, or the types and quality of e-books offered, has increased substantially. These facts are undisputed.

Apple also fundamentally transformed the e-reading experience, leaving rudimentary, black-and-white, and expensive single-purpose e-readers (e.g., the Kindle) in the dust. The e-book world changed dramatically when Apple launched its iBookstore on the iPad in April 2010. At the time, 400,000 e-book titles were available to the consuming public; today, readers can download more than 1.7 million e-books. Apple has also created or spurred a number of the most important e-reading hardware and software innovations, such as full-color, interactive, and vivid digital e-books.

The bottom line, said attorney Orin Snyder of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher, is that ?Apple should be commended, not sued. Apple injected much-needed competition and innovation into the eBook business. ? The DOJ?s case is based on fictions and incomplete quotations. The actual evidence proves that Apple did not conspire to fix prices in the eBook business. We look forward to trial.?

The DOJ?s case against Apple is currently scheduled to go to trial on June 3 in a New York District Court. Apple?s filing in full is below, and there?s more on the DOJ?s view of the case here.
